Brief history of the Internet and security issues

Before the internet existed, computers were big and lonely. We could not communicate with each other. A system spanning many nations is called international. A network spanning many nations is called inter network. On October 29th, 1969, Leonard Kleinrock and team at UCLA attempted to send the word “login” to a computer at Stanford. However, the computer system crashed after sending the letter L and O.

Tim Berners Lee, was the first person to propose management information of technology in his article, “Information Management: A Proposal” in March of 1989. He argued that notes with links, like references, between them is far more useful than a fixed system based on hierarchy. He proposed that a system works like a web is far more efficient than hierarchy. Tim Berner Lee officiated the propose the relationship between hypertext and the internet to produce the web that was worldwide. Thus, the worldwide web as we know it today. Internet connects user to user, while web connects information to information.

Mosaic, was the first internet browser released in 1993 that allowed users with little or no technical skill to browse the World Wide Web. it repeatedly gained popularity among people, as more people had access to the internet, internet security became an issue. Since early 90’s there were various forms of internet breach and hacking were occurring. The internet worm “ILOVEYOU” was the first well spread internet worm that occurred in 2000. It affected over a million internet users.

Methods of communication

Social networking: Social networking is a method of communication that uses social media platforms to build up relationships on a personal base with other users of the same platforms. Today one third of the population have access to platforms such as: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and many.

Email: Even before the internet became available to individuals, email was invented by Ray Tomlin-son in 1972. Since the invention, email promised to establish a strong form of communication network. Today, email is the main form of casual communication that most of the internet users have access to.

Wikis and blogs: wikis and blogs are website based information archived. Wikis allow public access to edit, update and add information. Blogs are personal website which is only accessible by a single user.

Podcasts and webcasts:

Podcasts and Webcasts might sound the same because they are similar, but no. they are different and there are differentiate between each of them. Each of the software requires different software to do their job. 

For example: Webcasts are mainly used to host the internet, meaning that the latest version of flash or flash-enabled browser web browser such as streaming protocol or stream media player.

Podcasts are being delivered using the internet. Podcasts are not streamed unlike Webcasts. It is a series of audio files that users can download and listen. Podcasts refers as an individual media file.

Streaming media: Streaming media: is a kind of multimedia that is presented to the end user. The term “stream” refers to the process of how media is delivered. “media” is something that can be audio or video. A user can use their media player to start digital video or digital audio. Nowadays, internet television is very common and refer as streaming media.

E-commerce and m-commerce

E-commerce and M-commerce: E commerce and M commerce: E commerce and M commerce are used to make customers’ lives easier. E-commerce  is for selling and buying stuff online while, m-commerce which is mobile commerce is a subcategory of eCommerce that focuses on buying via mobile devices. E commerce stands for electronic commerce or online shopping, where buying selling items or transaction would be via online using desktop computers or laptops. M commerce is also stands for electronic commerce but using mobile phones a user can do their transactions online via internet.
